Bread Machine – Spelt Bread

What is spelt bread?  Can you use your bread machine to make it?  Spelt is considered in some circles to be a subspecies of wheat.  In terms of appearance, it is very similar to wheat.  There are a few differences though.  In terms of flavor, spelt is sweeter than wheat.  It also contains more protein and vitamins and it is easier to digest than wheat.

In terms of healthy cooking/baking, finding recipes that require wheat or whole wheat flour but contain spelt flour as the substitute is not uncommon.  Although Spelt is not the solution for those of us requiring a gluten free diet, it can be tolerated by some who are allergic to wheat.

Using your bread machine to make Spelt bread is a great way to keep a healthy, tasty bread around your home.

Ingredients you will need: Bread Machine 1 ½ lb Spelt bread recipe
2 ¼ cups spelt flour
¾ cup bread flour
1/3 cup water
½ cup buttermilk
4 tsp gluten
2 tbsp margarine
1 ½ tsp salt
2 ½ tsps dry active yeast
2 tbsp brown sugar

Directions:
1.  Check bread machine owner’s manual for manufacturer recommended ingredient mixing order.
2.  Sift dry ingredients together to ensure great mixture.
3.  Add dry ingredients to bread machines bread pan.
4.  Select whole wheat bread setting on bread machine.  Start.
6.  Remove bread; allow cooling on wire rack.
