Bread Machine – Challah Bread

The term Challah has an interesting history. Challah is the name given by Jewish people of the Middle ages to Sabbath bread. It comes from the Hebrew word for “portion”. From a biblical perspective, Jews were required to separate a 1/24 portion from their dough. This portion would be given to the priests every Sabbath. Today, it is still Jewish tradition when baking bread to remove a portion. This portion is often burned in the oven.

You will often find that Challah comes in various shapes and sizes. I am sure that you have seen the braided loaves. The most common are the three braid loaves. The braids symbolized love, peace, truth and justice. Bread making machines can help with the kneading of your Challah bread.

Ingredients you will need: 4 Braid Challah
3 ¼ cups bread flour
¾ cup water
2 tbsp butter or olive oil
1 egg
1 tbsp poppy seed
1 ½ tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar
1 ½ tsp active dry yeast

1. Check bread machine owner’s manual for recommended mixing order.
2. Add all dry ingredients to bread machine bread pan. (except poppy seed and egg yolk)
3. Select dough setting on bread machine. Start.
4. Once dough cycle complete, remove, lightly flour, let rise for 15 minutes.
5. Separate dough into three equal pieces. Roll each into a 12 inch rope.
6. Braid bread. Once done pinch ends together. Fold ends under.
7. Grease cookie sheet. Place on sheet, let rise for about 30 minutes or until double in size.
8. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brush egg yolk over bread. Sprinkle Poppy seeds.
9. Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown.
