Olive Loaf

The term olive loaf brings two things to mind – the first is a loaf of bread that has olives incorporated into it in some manner; whether baked into the dough or chopped up and used as a form of decoration on top of the loaf.  The second is a form of cured deli lunch meat that has been mixed with olives.

Olive Loaf - bread making machinesOlives have played a vital role in Mediterranean cuisine for thousands of years.  Traditionally cured and flavored in an effort to create a wide variety of textures and flavors, these little fruits have been incorporated in numerous dishes!  Black olives tend to be a much more favored option for use in baking and appear sprinkled liberally in many loaves of olive bread; while the more robust green olives tend to shine more in the deli lunch meat version of an olive loaf.

Olives can be used to create interesting combinations in breads; combining the unique flavors that olives offer with a variety of herbs, spices, and even other fruits and vegetables.  An incredible assortment of breads can be created by an ambitious baker!

Consider preparing an olive loaf of bread as a part of the appetizer lineup at your next dinner party.  Combined with a selection of cheeses or spreads, olive breads are sure to be a hit amongst your family and friends!
