The shelf life of bread, ever wonder what influences it?  Of the several factors affecting bread shelf life, it is itsBröd
ingredients, storage container, temperature and storage location which are the most influential.

Bread prepared and containing ingredients such as butter, eggs and milk tend to keep longer than those without, i.e. those prepared with only water, salt, yeast and flour.

The storage of bread in a refrigerator generally tends to dry it out faster.  Store your bread at room temperature.  Maintain low levels of humidity as this helps to prevent molding and the condensing of moisture inside the bread.                                                                                                                                                                                          Creative Commons License photo credit: hepp

Where possible, avoid storing bread in plastic bags.  Plastic doesn’t allow bread to breathe and it often traps moisture inside.  Supermarket bread is the exception.  It is sliced and tends to dry out extremely fast when not stored in bags.

If you are baking your own bread, try storing it in a cloth bag or napkin, cut side down.  Cloths allow the bread to breath.  Paper also works well as it too allows for the circulation of air around your bread.

An understanding of the shelf life of bread helps you to enjoy each batch of your homemade bread even longer.
